What’s Tested
PSA Prostate Cancer Screening blood test measures the level of PSA in the blood, aiding in the detection and monitoring of prostate-related conditions, particularly prostate cancer.
Purpose of the PSA Blood Test:
Screening for Prostate Cancer – To detect early signs of prostate cancer in asymptomatic individuals, particularly in men over 50 years of age or those at higher risk due to family history or other factors.
Monitoring Prostate Cancer Treatment – To monitor the effectiveness of treatment for prostate cancer by tracking changes in PSA levels over time.
Assessing Prostate Health – To evaluate prostate health and detect abnormalities that may indicate conditions other than cancer, such as prostatitis (inflammation of the prostate) or benign prostatic hyperplasia (enlargement of the prostate).
The PSA (Prostate-Specific Antigen) test is a blood test that measures the level of PSA, a protein produced by both normal and cancerous cells of the prostate gland. This test is primarily used to help screen for, monitor, or assess the risk of prostate cancer in men, but elevated PSA levels can also be caused by benign conditions like prostatitis or an enlarged prostate.
PSA, a protein manufactured in the prostate by both cancerous and noncancerous cells, is measured through the PSA test to screen for prostate cancer in asymptomatic men. It’s worth noting that while PSA screening alone isn’t definitive for prostate cancer diagnosis, it prompts further medical evaluation. Elevated PSA levels may also signal noncancerous conditions like benign prostatic hyperplasia (enlarged prostate) or prostatitis (prostate inflammation). This screening aims to identify such conditions, enabling individuals to make informed decisions about their health.
● Normal Range: Typically, PSA levels below 4.0 nanograms per milliliter (ng/mL) are considered normal. However, this cutoff may vary based on age and other factors.
● Elevated Levels: PSA levels above the normal range may indicate prostate cancer, though other factors such as age, prostate size, and recent activities (e.g., ejaculation, cycling) can also affect PSA levels.
