What’s Tested
Pre-menopause blood test panel is designed to assess key hormone levels and related markers as women approach menopause, a phase known as perimenopause. Fluctuations in reproductive and thyroid hormones during this period can cause a variety of symptoms, including changes in menstrual cycles, hot flashes, sleep disturbances, mood swings, and more. Testing these hormones provides valuable insight into a woman’s transition toward menopause, helping healthcare providers distinguish between perimenopausal changes and other medical conditions, and enabling more tailored treatment or support.
This panel typically measures several hormones central to female reproductive health and overall well-being.
What’s being tested:
-
Follicle-Stimulating Hormone (FSH):
FSH helps regulate the menstrual cycle and ovarian function. As women approach menopause, FSH levels often rise, indicating declining ovarian reserve and function. -
Estradiol:
The main form of estrogen in women of reproductive age, estradiol tends to decrease as menopause nears. Lower estradiol can explain symptoms such as hot flashes, night sweats, or vaginal dryness. -
Luteinizing Hormone (LH):
LH works closely with FSH to control ovulation and menstrual cycles. LH levels may fluctuate or rise during perimenopause as ovarian function wanes. -
Thyroid Stimulating Hormone (TSH):
TSH is included to screen for thyroid dysfunction, which can cause symptoms (such as fatigue, mood changes, or irregular cycles) that overlap with perimenopause. Normal thyroid function is important to rule out other health issues. -
Prolactin:
Prolactin is a hormone primarily involved in lactation but can impact menstrual regularity and ovulation. Elevated levels may result from non-menopausal causes of menstrual changes, such as pituitary disorders.
A pre-menopause panel measuring FSH, estradiol, LH, TSH, and prolactin gives a detailed hormonal overview during the transition to menopause. These tests help clarify the cause of symptoms, distinguish perimenopausal changes from thyroid or pituitary disorders, and inform individualized management for optimal well-being during this life stage.
