Chlamydia and Gonorrhea are two of the most common sexually transmitted infections (STIs), often occurring together and frequently asymptomatic. Testing is crucial for diagnosis and treatment to prevent serious long-term health complications like infertility. These tests are designed to detect the presence of the bacteria Chlamydia trachomatis (which causes chlamydia) and Neisseria gonorrhoeae (which causes gonorrhea). Both infections can affect the genitals, rectum, and throat, and can be passed to newborns during childbirth. Because both infections often show no symptoms, screening is vital, especially for sexually active individuals or those with new/multiple partners.
- Chlamydia trachomatis: This test specifically targets and identifies the unique DNA or RNA (genetic material) belonging to the bacterium Chlamydia trachomatis. The presence of this distinct genetic code confirms an infection.
- Neisseria gonorrhoeae: Similarly, this test looks for and amplifies the specific DNA or RNA that is unique to the bacterium Neisseria gonorrhoeae. Finding this genetic signature indicates an active gonorrhea infection.
This test detects the genetic material (DNA or RNA) of the bacteria responsible for chlamydia and gonorrhea using a urine sample. This test uses a first-catch urine sample, which is more likely to contain the bacteria responsible for these infections.
