What’s Tested
This Total Testosterone test panel is a comprehensive blood test that evaluates not just your total testosterone, but also key related components to give a full picture of your hormonal health. This test is more informative than a basic testosterone screening and is commonly used to assess symptoms of hormonal imbalance, monitor therapy, or investigate unexplained symptoms in both men and women.
Why get the Testosterone Test?
– Useful for investigating symptoms like fatigue, low libido, mood changes, muscle loss, or infertility.
– Tracks effectiveness and safety of testosterone replacement or suppression therapy.
– Helps distinguish between low total testosterone and low free (active) testosterone, especially when SHBG or albumin levels are abnormal.
What’s being tested:
-
Total Testosterone:
Measures the sum of all testosterone in your blood, including both “free” (unbound) and “bound” forms. -
Free Testosterone:
The fraction of testosterone not attached to proteins, readily available for your body’s use. This is the biologically active portion. -
Sex Hormone-Binding Globulin (SHBG):
A protein that binds tightly to testosterone, making it inactive. SHBG levels affect how much free testosterone is available. -
Albumin
Another blood protein that binds testosterone, but less tightly than SHBG. The albumin-bound testosterone is considered “bioavailable” because it can be released for use by the body.
Physician Review included
What to expect after the test
After you provide your specimen, it generally takes few business days to process and release your test results. Your test results will be available in a clear and easy-to-read report. Independent physicians are available to discuss questions or concerns you may have regarding your results.
