What’s Tested

A Post-COVID blood test panel, often referred to as a post-acute sequelae of SARS-CoV-2 infection (PASC) panel or convalescent blood test, is a diagnostic tool used to assess the health status of individuals who have recovered from COVID-19. This test aims to evaluate various markers in the blood to detect any lingering effects or complications following COVID-19 infection.

Purpose of the Post-COVID Blood Test:

1. Assessing Organ Function: To evaluate the function of vital organs such as the lungs, heart, kidneys, and liver, which may have been affected by COVID-19 infection.
2. Detecting Inflammation and Immune Response: To measure markers of inflammation and assess the body’s immune response, which may remain elevated or dysregulated after recovering from COVID-19.
3. Monitoring Blood Clotting and Coagulation: To evaluate markers of blood clotting and coagulation, as COVID-19 infection has been associated with an increased risk of blood clots and thrombotic events.
4. Identifying Long-Term Complications: To detect any long-term complications or sequelae of COVID-19 infection, such as post-acute sequelae of SARS-CoV-2 infection (PASC), also known as long COVID.

What’s being tested:

Complete Blood Count (CBC): The CBC measures various components of the blood, including red blood cells (RBCs), white blood cells (WBCs), hemoglobin, hematocrit, and platelets. Provides a comprehensive overview of blood health and helps diagnose a wide range of conditions.

C-Reactive Protein (CRP): The High-Sensitivity C-Reactive Protein (hs-CRP) test measures levels of CRP, a protein produced by the liver in response to inflammation. Used to detect and monitor low levels of chronic inflammation and assess risk for cardiovascular diseases.

Ferritin: Measures the stored iron in the body. Low ferritin levels indicate depleted iron stores and iron deficiency anemia.

Thyroid Function Test: This test measures levels of thyroid hormones (TSH, T3, and T4) to assess thyroid function. Thyroid dysfunction, including hypothyroidism or hyperthyroidism, can occur as a result of autoimmune reactions triggered by COVID-19 infection.

Vitamin B12 and Vitamin D: Vitamin B12 and vitamin D levels may be measured to assess nutritional status. Deficiencies in these vitamins can contribute to fatigue, weakness, and other symptoms that may persist after COVID-19 recovery.

Basic Metabolic Panel (BMP) and Hepatic Function Panel: These panels include tests that assess kidney function (BMP) and liver function (Hepatic Function Panel). Abnormalities in these tests can indicate kidney or liver damage, which may occur as a result of severe COVID-19 illness or as complications during recovery.

Urinalysis: Assesses the physical and chemical properties of urine. Abnormalities in urine composition can indicate kidney dysfunction or urinary tract infections, which may occur as complications of COVID-19.

Interpretation of Results:

1. Normal Findings indicate that organ function, inflammation markers, and blood cell counts are within the expected range, suggesting no significant long-term effects of COVID-19 infection.
2. Abnormal Findings  may indicate ongoing inflammation, organ dysfunction, or other complications related to COVID-19 infection, requiring further evaluation and management by healthcare providers.
