What’s Tested

Perimenopause is the natural transition period leading up to menopause, where a woman’s body gradually produces less reproductive hormones. This can cause a rollercoaster of symptoms like irregular periods, hot flashes, mood swings, and sleep disturbances, as hormone levels fluctuate wildly.

Perimenopause blood tests are diagnostic tests used to assess hormonal changes that occur as a woman approaches menopause. Perimenopause refers to the transitional phase leading up to menopause, during which hormone levels fluctuate and menstrual cycles may become irregular. These blood tests help healthcare providers evaluate hormone levels and provide insights into a woman’s reproductive health and menopausal status.

What’s being tested:

Follicle-Stimulating Hormone (FSH): FSH (Follicle-Stimulating Hormone) is a key hormone from your pituitary gland that’s crucial for reproduction in both sexes. In women, it stimulates egg development and estrogen production. Doctors test FSH to assess fertility, diagnose menopause, or evaluate puberty issues, as abnormal levels indicate reproductive or hormonal imbalances.

Estradiol: Estradiol is the most potent form of estrogen, a vital hormone found in both women and men, though primarily associated with female reproductive health. In women, it regulates the menstrual cycle, supports bone density, and impacts heart and brain health. Its levels naturally decline during menopause.

Luteinizing Hormone (LH): Luteinizing Hormone (LH) is a key hormone produced by your pituitary gland, a small gland in your brain. It’s crucial for reproduction in  women. In women, a surge in LH triggers ovulation (the release of an egg) and helps prepare the uterus for pregnancy. Doctors measure LH to investigate fertility issues, track ovulation, diagnose menopause, or evaluate puberty problems, as abnormal levels can indicate various hormonal or reproductive imbalances.

Thyroid Stimulating Hormone (TSH): TSH (Thyroid-Stimulating Hormone) from your pituitary gland tells your thyroid gland how much metabolism-controlling hormone to make. This vital feedback loop keeps your body’s energy levels balanced. High TSH often means an underactive thyroid (hypothyroidism), while low TSH suggests an overactive thyroid (hyperthyroidism). TSH testing is crucial for diagnosing these imbalances, which affect almost every bodily function.

Perimenopause blood tests assist in diagnosing perimenopause, evaluating ovarian function, and guiding treatment for menopausal symptoms, aiding women in managing the physical and hormonal changes associated with this transitional phase.
