What’s Tested

diabetes risk test panel is a group of blood and urine tests designed to evaluate your risk for developing diabetes—especially type 2 diabetes—or to detect diabetes at an early, more treatable stage. This panel is recommended for people with risk factors such as being overweight, having a family history of diabetes, high blood pressure, or other metabolic conditions.

Who should get tested:

– Adults age 45 or older
– Anyone with risk factors: overweight/obesity, family history, high blood pressure, abnormal cholesterol, physical inactivity, or a history of gestational diabetes
– People with symptoms of high blood sugar (increased thirst, frequent urination, fatigue)
– Individuals with cardiovascular disease or other metabolic conditions

What’s being tested:

Hemoglobin A1c (HbA1c) – measures the average blood glucose levels over the past 2 to 3 months. It reflects the percentage of hemoglobin in the blood that is coated with sugar (glycated). Used to diagnose and monitor diabetes and prediabetes, and to assess long-term blood sugar control.

The HbA1c test is a key diagnostic tool for diabetes. An HbA1c level of 6.5% or higher on two separate tests indicates diabetes. It provides a more stable and accurate measure of blood sugar control compared to daily glucose tests, which can fluctuate. The HbA1c test is crucial for diagnosing diabetes, detecting prediabetes, and monitoring long-term blood sugar control in individuals with diabetes. It helps in assessing the effectiveness of treatment and in reducing the risk of complications associated with poor blood sugar management.

Glucose – measures the level of glucose (sugar) in the blood. Glucose is the primary source of energy for the body’s cells, and its levels need to be carefully regulated. Used to diagnose and monitor conditions related to blood sugar levels, particularly diabetes, prediabetes, and hypoglycemia.

High blood glucose levels (hyperglycemia) are a key indicator of diabetes, a condition where the body either doesn’t produce enough insulin (type 1 diabetes) or becomes resistant to insulin (type 2 diabetes). The glucose test is essential for diagnosing diabetes and assessing its severity. The glucose test is vital for diagnosing and managing diabetes, detecting prediabetes and hypoglycemia, and monitoring overall metabolic health. It provides essential information for maintaining healthy blood sugar levels and preventing complications associated with abnormal glucose levels.

Cholesterol  – a fatty substance necessary for building cell membranes and producing hormones. The test measures different types of cholesterol in the blood, including total cholesterol, LDL (bad) cholesterol, HDL (good) cholesterol, and triglycerides.
High levels of LDL cholesterol and low levels of HDL cholesterol are associated with an increased risk of cardiovascular diseases such as heart attack and stroke. Regular cholesterol testing helps assess and manage cardiovascular risk by tracking cholesterol levels and guiding lifestyle or medication interventions.

Albumin/Creatinine Ratio:

Albumin: A protein normally found in the blood. Healthy kidneys prevent significant amounts of albumin from entering the urine.
Creatinine:    A waste product from muscle metabolism, consistently excreted in urine. Measuring creatinine helps adjust for urine concentration.
