What’s Tested

Complete thyroid test panel is a group of blood tests used to evaluate how well your thyroid gland is functioning. The thyroid, a small butterfly-shaped gland in your neck, produces hormones that regulate metabolism, energy, and many vital body processes. Because thyroid disorders can cause symptoms ranging from fatigue and weight changes to mood swings and heart problems, accurate testing is important for detecting both overactive (hyperthyroidism) and underactive (hypothyroidism) thyroid conditions.

This panel typically includes several related measurements—TSH, total T4, T3 uptake, free T4 index (FTI), and total T3—to provide a complete picture of thyroid health. Each component plays a specific role in diagnosis and helps clarify the nature and severity of thyroid dysfunction.

What’s being tested:

TSH (Thyroid Stimulating Hormone):

  • The key screening test for thyroid problems, TSH is produced by the pituitary gland and stimulates the thyroid. High TSH usually indicates hypothyroidism (an underactive thyroid), while low TSH suggests hyperthyroidism (an overactive thyroid).

  • Total T4 (Thyroxine):
Measures the total amount of thyroxine in the blood, including both hormone bound to proteins and hormone free in circulation. Abnormal total T4 can signal thyroid issues but may be affected by changes in protein levels.

  • T3 Uptake:
Reflects how much of the thyroid hormone-binding protein in the blood is available. It’s not a direct measure of thyroid hormone, but helps interpret total T4 and calculate the free T4 index.

  • Free T4 Index (FTI):
Calculated using total T4 and T3 uptake, this index estimates the amount of free (active) T4 hormone in the body. It’s more accurate than total T4 alone, especially if protein levels are abnormal.

  • Total T3 (Triiodothyronine):
Measures both bound and free T3 in the blood, the more active thyroid hormone form. Total T3 can help diagnose hyperthyroidism, especially if T4 and TSH results are unclear.

Together, these tests enable doctors to accurately diagnose and monitor various thyroid disorders. By considering multiple aspects of thyroid function, this panel helps ensure that subtle or complex thyroid imbalances are not missed, leading to better treatment and health outcomes.
