What’s Tested
A Cholesterol & Lipid panel is a common blood test that measures the levels of different fats in your blood, primarily to assess your risk for heart disease and stroke. This panel evaluates several key metrics: total cholesterol, LDL (“bad”) cholesterol, HDL (“good”) cholesterol, and triglycerides. High levels of LDL and triglycerides, or low levels of HDL, can signal a greater risk for blocked arteries, atherosclerosis, or other cardiovascular problems. By monitoring these values, healthcare providers can catch potential issues early and recommend lifestyle changes or medications to reduce risks.
Routine cholesterol and lipid panel testing is advised for most adults every 4–6 years, or more often if you have risk factors such as a family history of heart disease, diabetes, high blood pressure, obesity, or smoking. Since cholesterol and other lipids can silently build up in your arteries with no symptoms, regular screening is vital for prevention and early intervention, making this test a cornerstone of cardiovascular health management
What’s being tested:
Total Cholesterol measures the combined amount of cholesterol in your blood, including both beneficial HDL (“good” cholesterol) and harmful LDL (“bad” cholesterol), giving an overview of your heart disease risk.
LDL (Low-Density Lipoprotein) Cholesterol is called “bad” cholesterol because high levels lead to the buildup of plaque in arteries, which can increase the risk of heart attacks and strokes. Your body makes LDL naturally, but factors like diet high in saturated fats and lack of exercise can raise it further.
HDL (High-Density Lipoprotein) Cholesterol is “good” cholesterol, as it picks up excess cholesterol in the blood and carries it back to the liver for removal. Higher HDL levels are associated with lower heart disease and stroke risk, and also have anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effects.
Tiglycerides are a type of fat in the blood stored from unused calories. High triglycerides can thicken artery walls or lead to hardening, raising heart disease risk, especially when combined with low HDL or high LDL.
Very Low-Density Lipoprotein (VLDL) is another type of “bad” cholesterol produced by the liver. It mainly carries triglycerides through the bloodstream. High VLDL levels contribute to plaque buildup in the arteries, further increasing cardiovascular risk. VLDL is often estimated based on triglyceride measurements, since direct measurement is less common.
