What’s Tested

Fatty liver disease, also known as hepatic steatosis, occurs when fat builds up in the liver. To identify if you have nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) and to evaluate your risk for developing advanced liver fibrosis or cirrhosis, your blood will be tested for alanine aminotransferase (ALT), aspartate aminotransferase (AST), and platelet levels. NAFLD is the most common liver disease worldwide, yet less than 5% of those affected are aware of their condition. These test results, combined with your age, will calculate a fibrosis-4 (FIB-4) index score. If your FIB-4 score is 1.30 or higher, further testing using an enhanced liver fibrosis (ELF) score will be conducted with the same blood sample to assess the likelihood of progressing to cirrhosis or other liver-related issues. Early detection offers treatment options that can reverse or slow the progression of the disease. Without treatment, NAFLD can lead to more severe conditions such as NASH, fibrosis, and cirrhosis.

What’s being tested:

CMP Components:

  • ALT (Alanine Aminotransferase): Evaluates liver inflammation and damage.

  • AST (Aspartate Aminotransferase): Assesses liver injury or disease.

  • Alkaline Phosphatase (ALP): Indicates bile duct health or obstruction.

  • Albumin: Checks liver’s ability to produce essential proteins.

  • Total Protein: Measures overall protein synthesis in the liver.

  • Bilirubin: Monitors bile metabolism affected by liver function.

  • Glucose, Calcium, Sodium, Potassium, Chloride, CO2, BUN, Creatinine: Standard CMP markers evaluating general metabolic status and organ health.

Additional Liver & Fatty Liver Tests:

  • Gamma-Glutamyl Transferase (GGT): Sensitive for liver disease or excess alcohol use.

  • Prothrombin Time (PT): Tests clotting; abnormal in advanced liver damage.

  • CBC (Complete Blood Count): Screens for anemia or infection related to liver disease.

  • Iron Studies (Ferritin, Transferrin Saturation): Assesses for iron overload or liver-associated metabolic issues.

Physician Review included

What to expect after the test

After you provide your specimen, it generally takes few business days to process and release your test results. Your test results will be available in a clear and easy-to-read report. Independent physicians are available to discuss questions or concerns you may have regarding your results.
