What’s Tested

Kidney blood test panel, also known as a renal function panel or kidney function test, is a diagnostic tool used to assess the health and function of the kidneys by measuring various markers in the blood. The kidneys play a crucial role in filtering waste products and excess substances from the blood, regulating electrolyte balance, and producing hormones involved in blood pressure regulation and red blood cell production.

Purpose of the Kidney Blood Test

1. Assess Kidney Function: To evaluate how well the kidneys are filtering waste products and regulating fluid and electrolyte balance in the body.
2. Detect Kidney Disease: To detect signs of kidney disease or dysfunction, including chronic kidney disease, acute kidney injury, or kidney damage from other health conditions.
3. Monitor Kidney Health: To monitor individuals with known kidney conditions or risk factors for kidney disease, such as diabetes, hypertension, or a family history of kidney disease.

What’s being tested:

Creatinine: a waste product produced by muscle metabolism that is filtered out of the blood by the kidneys. Elevated levels may indicate reduced kidney function.

Albumin: a protein normally found in the blood. Abnormal levels of albumin in the urine (albuminuria) may indicate kidney damage or disease, such as diabetic nephropathy or glomerulonephritis.

eGFR (Estimated Glomerular Filtration Rate): a measure of how well the kidneys are filtering waste products from the blood. It is calculated based on various factors, including the level of creatinine in the blood, age, gender, and race. A lower eGFR value indicates decreased kidney function, while a higher value suggests better kidney function. The eGFR is a crucial parameter in assessing kidney health and diagnosing and staging kidney disease.

Creatinine/Albumin Ratio: a measure of the amount of creatinine relative to the amount of albumin in the urine. It is used to assess kidney function and detect kidney damage or disease. An elevated creatinine/albumin ratio may indicate kidney damage or dysfunction, such as diabetic nephropathy, glomerulonephritis, or other conditions affecting the kidneys’ ability to filter waste products and maintain fluid balance.

Importance of Kidney Profile Testing:

Kidney blood tests can help detect kidney disease in its early stages when treatment is most effective. Regular testing allows for ongoing monitoring of kidney function in individuals with known kidney conditions or risk factors. Identifying and managing risk factors for kidney disease, such as diabetes and hypertension, can help prevent or delay the onset of kidney problems.

Physician Review included

What to expect after the test

After you provide your specimen, it generally takes few business days to process and release your test results. Your test results will be available in a clear and easy-to-read report. Independent physicians are available to discuss questions or concerns you may have regarding your results.
