Genital Ulcer & STD Expanded Panel

Test Overview

The Genital Ulcer and STD Expanded Panel is a comprehensive diagnostic tool designed to detect the most common causes of genital ulcers and sexually transmitted infections (STIs). It uses advanced PCR (Polymerase Chain Reaction) technology for precise detection, ensuring faster and more accurate results than traditional methods.

Conditions and Pathogens Detected

Viral Infections:

  • Herpes Simplex Virus 1 (HSV-1)
  • Herpes Simplex Virus 2 (HSV-2)
  • Varicella-Zoster Virus (VZV) – Rare cause of genital ulcers
  • Human Papillomavirus (HPV) – For wart-like lesions, not typical ulcers
  • Cytomegalovirus (CMV) – Rare in immunocompetent individuals

Bacterial Infections:

  • Treponema pallidum (Syphilis) – Detects the DNA of syphilis-causing bacteria
  • Haemophilus ducreyi (Chancroid) – Causes painful genital ulcers
  • Klebsiella granulomatis (Donovanosis/Granuloma inguinale)
  • Mycoplasma genitalium – Often linked to urethritis and cervicitis
  • Chlamydia trachomatis (Lymphogranuloma venereum – LGV strains)

Parasitic Infection:

  • Trichomonas vaginalis – Common STI that may contribute to genital irritation and ulcers

Symptoms That May Require This Panel

  • Painful or painless genital ulcers
  • Unusual discharge or foul odor
  • Burning sensation during urination
  • Genital redness, swelling, or irritation
  • Swollen lymph nodes in the groin
  • Painful intercourse
  • Fever, fatigue, or general malaise (associated with systemic STIs)

Sample Collection

  • Sample Type: Lesion swab, genital swab, or urine sample (depending on suspected infection)
  • Container: Sterile swab in transport medium or sterile urine container
  • Collection Tips: Avoid sexual intercourse for at least 24 hours prior to collection. Do not cleanse the area before sampling to preserve pathogen DNA. For ulcers, swab the base of the lesion where viral or bacterial DNA is concentrated

Result Interpretation

Test Component:Normal (Negative):Abnormal (Positive):
HSV-1 / HSV-2Not DetectedDetected – Confirms Herpes Infection
Treponema pallidum (Syphilis)Not DetectedDetected – Confirms Syphilis
Haemophilus ducreyi (Chancroid)Not DetectedDetected – Confirms Chancroid
Klebsiella granulomatis (Donovanosis)Not DetectedDetected – Suggests Granuloma inguinale
Chlamydia trachomatis (LGV strains)Not DetectedDetected – Suggests LGV
Trichomonas vaginalisNot DetectedDetected – Confirms Trichomoniasis
Mycoplasma genitaliumNot DetectedDetected – Indicates STI or genital irritation

Treatment Guidance Based on Results

  • Herpes Simplex Virus (HSV-1 or HSV-2) → Antiviral therapy (Acyclovir, Valacyclovir)
  • Syphilis (Treponema pallidum) → Penicillin G (First-line treatment)
  • Chancroid (Haemophilus ducreyi) → Azithromycin or Ceftriaxone
  • Donovanosis (Klebsiella granulomatis) → Azithromycin (prolonged treatment)
  • Lymphogranuloma venereum (Chlamydia trachomatis – LGV strains) → Doxycycline (21-day course)
  • Trichomoniasis (Trichomonas vaginalis) → Metronidazole or Tinidazole

Turnaround Time

  • PCR Panel Results: 24–48 hours
  • Syphilis serology or additional confirmatory tests: 2–5 days
