Covid-19

Test Overview

The COVID-19 Test is a diagnostic method used to detect the presence of the SARS-CoV-2 virus, the cause of COVID-19. Testing helps confirm active infection, determine contagiousness, and guide appropriate treatment or isolation measures.

Types of COVID-19 Tests

1. PCR (Polymerase Chain Reaction) Test:

  • Purpose: Detects viral RNA with high accuracy.
  • Best for: Confirming active infection, even in asymptomatic cases.
  • Turnaround Time: 24–48 hours.

2. Rapid Antigen Test:

  • Purpose: Identifies viral proteins for fast results.
  • Best for: Quick screening in symptomatic individuals.
  • Turnaround Time: 15–30 minutes.

3. Antibody (Serology) Test:

  • Purpose: Detects antibodies indicating past infection or vaccination response.
  • Best for: Determining previous exposure.
  • Turnaround Time: 1–3 days.

Sample Collection

  • Sample Type: Nasopharyngeal swab, nasal swab, or saliva sample.
  • Container: Viral transport medium (VTM) tube for PCR, specialized rapid test device for antigen testing.

Collection Instructions

  1. Wash hands thoroughly before collection.
  2. Tilt head back slightly.
  3. Insert the swab gently into one nostril, rotating for several seconds.
  4. Repeat in the other nostril (if required).
  5. Place the swab in the designated container for transport.

Result Interpretation

Test Type:Negative Result:Positive Result:
PCR TestNo viral RNA detectedViral RNA detected – Confirms COVID-19 infection
Rapid Antigen TestNo viral proteins detectedViral proteins detected – Suggests active infection
Antibody Test (IgG/IgM)No antibodies detectedAntibodies detected – Indicates past infection or vaccine response

When to Get Tested

  • If you experience COVID-19 symptoms: Fever, cough, loss of taste or smell, fatigue, etc.
  • If you’ve been exposed to someone with COVID-19.
  • Before traveling or attending large events (if required).
  • As part of routine screening for healthcare or essential workers.

Recommended Actions Based on Results

  • Positive Result (PCR or Antigen): Isolate immediately, inform close contacts, and follow healthcare provider guidance.
  • Negative Result with Symptoms: Consider retesting if symptoms persist or worsen.
  • Positive Antibody Result: May indicate prior infection or vaccination.

Turnaround Time

  • PCR Test: 24–48 hours
  • Rapid Antigen Test: 15–30 minutes
  • Antibody Test: 1–3 days

Why Choose a COVID-19 Test?
